How to Celebrate the Holidays in Philly This Year
December 3, 2020Big family dinners, holiday festivals, beloved Philly traditions like the Macy’s light show—all of these are going to look quite different this year. But even if your focus is on safety, that doesn’t mean you can’t still find ways to enjoy the sights, sounds and spirit of the holiday season without traveling far from your 1213 Walnut apartment.
One such way to do that is at Winter on Broad Street. The brand-new holiday light show is headquartered outside the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia, just a 10-minute trip on the Broad Street Subway from your 1213 Walnut apartment. Open through Jan. 3, the outdoor event is a winter wonderland for those who love holiday lights and is also a great way to enjoy the traditions of the holidays while staying safe.
The festivities include nearly 200 light sculptures and displays, powered by nearly a half-million bulbs. Stroll through a forest of 45 brilliantly lit trees, take tons of selfies in the light tunnels and marvel at the larger-than-life reindeer and ornaments. And, given the location of the event, it will be graced each night by a Philly favorite: Gritty. The Flyers mascot will pose for (socially distanced!) holiday photos in his very own “Gritty Claus” workshop.
While the lights offer plenty to see and do, Winter on Broad Street also features kids’ activities like stations to write letters to Santa as well as ornament decorating workshops. Live holiday music and entertainment will take place throughout the festival, setting the mood for a festive night. Before you set off to check out the lights, grab some holiday treats and snacks, along with spiked cider, mulled wine or craft cocktails. The Mistletoe Marketplace is also a must-see, with its holiday ornaments, clothing, artwork and other handmade goods—a perfect stop to help you round out your holiday shopping list.
So don your ugly Christmas sweater and head out into Philly to enjoy this unique but memorable holiday season!
