Cure Your Cabin Fever at This Local Park
May 14, 2020The last few months may have had you spending lots of time on the couch of your 1213 Walnut apartment, but with spring soon turning into summer, there’s no better time to get out and about and enjoy sunshine in the city. While getting back to normal is going to take some time, a simple stroll in the park can still be a safe and healthy way to get a change of scenery and some exercise. And with all of the green spaces in Philadelphia, there are plenty of spots to choose from.
One of the best places to take in the greenery is at Washington Square Park, a half-mile from your 1213 Walnut apartment. The historic square is conveniently located between Center City and Old City, so a walk to and from can help you spot both some of the city’s most renowned architectural marvels and its most famous historic sites. It’s just a block from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell and, while they may not be open right now, getting to see some of the city’s most famous spots up close and personal is a great way to get yourself reenergized for when Philly gets back to normal.
The park itself has its own rich history. It dates to the 1600s and was one of five original squares plotted as public green space by the city’s founder, William Penn. In its earliest days, it served as a burial ground for some of the city’s poorest residents, both American and British soldiers killed in the Revolutionary War and, later, victims of yellow fever. In the 1800s, city planners closed the burial ground and invested heavily in the park, planting more than 60 species of trees and laying down public walkways. Its fascinating past is brought to life within the park today, with monuments to George Washington and a memorial to unknown soldiers who died in the Revolutionary War.
So if you’re craving some Philly history along with your exercise, lace up the sneakers, leash up the dog and head out of your 1213 Walnut apartment to get a little fresh air, stretch your legs and get a taste of springtime in the city.
