Where to Celebrate St. Paddy’s in Philly
March 12, 2020One of the biggest party days of the year is almost here! On St. Patrick’s Day (and the weekends before and after!), both Camden and Philly become a sea of green as partiers don their shamrocks and raise a glass (or a few) to the holiday. With nearly every bar going green for the occasion, it can be hard to find an authentic spot to celebrate St. Patty’s—but luckily your 1213 Walnut apartment is right near a longtime Irish staple.
McGillin’s Old Ale House has been serving up Irish cheer in Center City since 1860—even before City Hall was built and the Civil War was won! The spot is the oldest, continuously run tavern throughout the entire city—so a trip here on St. Patty’s Day isn’t just for a great party, it’s also an opportunity to get a taste of Philly history. The multi-floor venue features several dining areas and bars, with many retaining the original architecture of the historic building.
That history even comes to life on the food menu, with options like the 1860 steak, which joins plenty of Irish favorites, such as Shepherd’s Pie. On the drinks side, McGillin’s offers 30 beers on tap, which are largely brewed in Eastern Pennsylvania, as well as Irish selections like O’Hara’s, the only stout brewed exclusively in Ireland.
McGillin’s is a prime spot for St. Patty’s partiers and, as such, it opens its doors on the holiday at 10 a.m. Stop by at any point in the first half of March, however, and take advantage of St. Patty’s food specials, including bangers and mash, corned beef and lamb stew. Also this month, McGillin’s is serving up its famous Irish Potato Martini, sure to get you into the spirit of the season.
So break out the green beads and get ready to celebrate St. Patty’s in Philly!
