This Pop-Up Holiday Bar is Lighting Up the Neighborhood—and Instagram
December 14, 2018Philadelphia’s ultimate (and only?) Christmas-themed bar, Tinsel, has returned to Midtown Village at 116 S. 12th Street, and it’s bigger and better than ever. It’s no surprise that this hot spot is generating a lot of buzz. With its festive cocktail menu, special events and fundraisers, and over-the-top decorations, Tinsel serves up some serious seasonal fun.
Philadelphia’s ultimate (and only?) Christmas-themed bar, Tinsel, has returned to Midtown Village at 116 S. 12th Street, and it’s bigger and better than ever. It’s no surprise that this hot spot is generating a lot of buzz. With its festive cocktail menu, special events and fundraisers, and over-the-top decorations, Tinsel serves up some serious seasonal fun.
Creator Teddy Sourias, the mind behind some of our neighborhood’s most popular restaurants and bars like Brü Craft & Wurst, U-Bahn, and Tradesman’s, as well as the nearby Uptown Beer Garden and Cinder, told us that he miraculously brought this year’s iteration of Tinsel to life within the last month.
The special cocktails are more than worth the trip. Must-trys include the Snow Globe, with Grey Goose La Vanille, White Cranberry, and “edible snow” in an globe keepsake, the Gingerbread Man, with Northbound Rye and house-made Gingersnap syrup, and the Canned “Good”, with a choice of Deep Eddy’s Vodka or Bacardi Cuatro, cranberry, and cinnamon. (Plus, Tinsel donates $1 to MANNA with each Canned Good purchase.)
Everything in the space is spellbinding. You’ll be in an Instagram frenzy when you see all the décor, an elaborately strung ornament chandelier, and a throne fit for Santa himself. Grab your camera and a cocktail: Here are all the stunning spaces you can snap a selfie with when you’re there.
The Tinsel-ed Out Tree
First things first. Right when you walk in, you’ll find the holiday tree just below Santa’s workshop. After all, nothing makes your Insta grid more festive than a classic tree pic. (Psst: You can also drop off your letters to Santa in the mailbox on the way in to make sure you get the right gifts this year.)
Presents Hung on the Ceiling with Care
Believe us when we say that this place is literally decked out from top to bottom. It’s hard to miss the huge swarm of presents hanging over the bar—it’s like a dream cloud of gifts dancing above your head.
A Very Bow-tiful Wall
Don’t be surprised if your presents don’t come with bows this year—Tinsel might have rounded up all the bows in Philly to design this wall that’s sure to make for a stunning selfie background.
The Ornament Chandelier
Gather in the back room for an jamboree of sparkle and color. It’s hard to pass up a photo opportunity like this chandelier made from 500 shiny ornaments.
Santa’s Throne
Last but certainly not least, the best spot in the house is Santa’s highly Instagrammable throne. Fun fact: The chair is the original throne from Saks Fifth Avenue, where Santa himself used to hold court! Needless to say, a pic in this spot is a holiday must-have on any Instagram grid.
Tinsel is open 5 to 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 2 p.m. to midnight Wednesday through Friday, noon to midnight Saturday, and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. See you there for some neighborhood holiday cheer!
