NEIGHBORHOOD
The Midtown Village Guide to Center City Restaurant Week
January 12, 2018Ah, January… The holiday decorations have come down and the gifts have been unwrapped, but the cold still lingers.
Good thing there’s plenty to do (and eat) indoors in Philadelphia to ensure you stay warm and avoid going stir crazy. As a matter of fact, call us biased, but we think the best dining in the whole city exists right here in our very own Midtown Village.
Ah, January… The holiday decorations have come down and the gifts have been unwrapped, but the cold still lingers.
Good thing there’s plenty to do (and eat) indoors in Philadelphia to ensure you stay warm and avoid going stir crazy. As a matter of fact, call us biased, but we think the best dining in the whole city exists right here in our very own Midtown Village.
With Center City Restaurant Week right around the corner, we rounded up all of our neighbors participating in the event, which offers $20 three-course lunches and $35 three-course dinners from January 14–26.
Let’s dig in!
1225Raw Sushi and Sake Lounge (1225 Sansom St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BPQxxxGgDcA
Our across-the-street neighbor 1225Raw is one of the city’s hottest sushi spots, and for good reason—their extensive menus leave everyone happy from corporate lunches to casual date nights. For Restaurant Week, start on the lighter side with an avocado or salmon skin salad, then move on to delicious main course options ranging from surf ‘n’ turf teriyaki to salmon volcano rolls. For dessert, mochi samplers and green tea tempura ice cream will send you off in style.
Barbuzzo Restaurant (110 S 13th St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BdlWj8qFKfg
At Barbuzzo, one of many participating eateries from Chef Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran, both the lunch and dinner Restaurant Week menus begin with sheep’s milk ricotta accompanied by grilled country bread. After that, move through a plethora of courses like swordfish spiedini, braised short rib and capricciosa pizza before finishing things off with the Mediterranean-inspired restaurant’s famed budino dessert, packed with dark chocolate crust, vanilla bean caramel and sea salt.
Bud & Marilyn’s (1234 Locust St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BZj2fFCh7x7
Your Instagram feed might make you think that the funfetti cake at Bud & Marilyn’s is the extent of the comfort food haven’s menu, but after a Restaurant Week meal, you’ll think otherwise. Start off with the signature cheese curds whether you’re dining for lunch or dinner, then choose between Marilyn’s fried chicken, Bud’s double patty burger and everything in between. If you still have room for dessert, we think the whiskey-butterscotch bread pudding will be hard to beat.
Caribou Café (1126 Walnut St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BZOvpK-Dmtt
Make sure you brush up on your French before diving into Caribou Café’s Restaurant Week menu! French culinary favorites like escargot in puff pastry, trout almondine and gougère with comté and ham grace the main menu, while chocolate soufflé cake and pot de crème du jour round out the dessert options. Bon appétit!
El Vez (121 S 13th St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BY6ntBDlroa
El Vez, perhaps the culinary cornerstone of Midtown Village, brings its usual classics to its four-course Restaurant Week dinner menu. Start with tortilla soup, signature guacamole or tuna tostadas, then move on to gourmet staples of Mexican cuisine like tacos, empanadas, enchiladas and more. For dessert, good luck choosing between tres leches cake and churros with Mexican chocolate sauce.
Indeblue (205 S 13th St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BcZcZBMH4Qy
If you score a table at Indeblue during Restaurant Week, be prepared to make some deliciously difficult decisions! With seven to nine options on the first and second course menus for both lunch and dinner, your taste buds will be surrounded with Indian flavors ranging from barbeque pork samosa rolls to chicken tikka wraps with spicy masala fries.
Jamonera (105 S 13th St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BbvEAtkFAOh
Known for their small plates, tapas and selection of Spanish wines, Jamonera offers some of the most shareable selections in the city. For Restaurant Week dinner, choose between starters like white bean puree and papas fritas for the table to share, then enjoy unique first and second courses ranging from heirloom pumpkin croquetas to grilled skirt steak. For dessert, we think the blood orange sangria sorbet is a can’t-miss regardless of the chilly weather outside.
Little Nonna’s (1234 Locust St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BcVXz55nL1B
A neighborhood favorite of many locals, Little Nonna’s offers hearty Italian eats with lots of flavor. For Restaurant Week, the menu encompasses mouthwatering choices from Italian grilled seafood to seared potato gnocchi, complete with fresh-pulled mozzarella and cream for the table to share. When it’s time for dessert, pistachio cannoli, tiramisu and apple crumble will ensure you leave with a smile on your face.
Lolita (106 S 13th St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BZ1KHV1jd3f
Mexican cuisine gets a modern twist at Lolita, where the Restaurant Week menu starts with Mexican chopped salad and roasted beet and jicama salad. The second-course options for lunch and dinner are expansive and incorporate everything from roasted butternut enchiladas to crispy fish tacos. Finish things off with coconut tres leches cake or passion fruit-basil sorbet that’s sure to hit the spot.
Sampan (124 S 13th St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BbnMU6xHy6Q
Sampan’s Restaurant Week menu deviates from the usual format, but that’s a good thing! Your entire table makes a collective choice from seven culinary categories to make sure all the bases are covered. Dishes include edamame dumplings, Korean BBQ beef, crispy rock shrimp, filet mignon, glazed salmon, vegetable fried rice and more. Decisions, decisions!
Spice 28 (1228 Chestnut St.)
Asian fusion hotspot Spice 28’s lunch and dinner menus for Restaurant Week have close to 20 different options for some courses, so you won’t want to go with your most indecisive friend. With tons of salad, rice, noodle and curry flavor variations, your menu is as customizable to your own flavor preferences as can be.
Time Restaurant (1315 Sansom St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BdUBo02lapZ
A favorite for its live jazz and wine lists, Time’s Restaurant Week menu keeps things pleasantly simple with first courses of mixed greens, butternut squash soup and dry-aged beef skewers. Next, enjoy a special daily preparation of risotto before diving into a third-course array of smoked beef brisket, seared Atlantic salmon or casarecce pasta. For dessert, warm bread pudding and sorbet seal the deal with classic flavors.
Vintage Wine Bar & Bistro (129 S 13th St.)
https://www.instagram.com/p/BdTh-NJnBLv
Obviously a go-to spot for wine aficionados, Vintage has plenty of lines on its culinary resume, too. During Restaurant Week, start dinner with gorgonzola toast or sweet potato vichyssoise, then move on to selections of vegetables, braised short rib and pan-seared salmon. For dessert, we stopped reading at “salted caramel pot de creme” — say no more!
No matter where you choose to have your Center City Restaurant Week adventure, it’s bound to be a good one if it’s in Midtown Village. We can’t wait to see the mouthwatering meals created by these wonderful restaurants who we’re lucky to call neighbors!
