Neighbor Spotlight: Raising a Glass to Fergie’s Pub
November 27, 2017When it comes to space, Fergie’s Pub knows a thing or two about getting up close and personal.
When it comes to space, Fergie’s Pub knows a thing or two about getting up close and personal.
Located at 1214 Sansom Street, the TV-free Irish pub has witnessed a great deal of change in the Midtown Village area over the past 23 years. With neighbors like Duross & Langel, 1225Raw and more, the area has transformed itself into blocks full of eateries, trendy bars and boutiques for every style.
Fergus “Fergie” Carey is no stranger to transformation, either. Born in Ireland, Carey came to the states for an escape. After moving to Philly from Houston, Fergie began bartending around the city. Seven years later, Carey and his business partner Wajid Abed opened up their first bar: Fergie’s Pub.
Carey busts a move on the Fergie’s stage.
“The worst thing that could happen [when we opened] was that it could fail and I would go into debt,” Carey joked.
Debt is the farthest thing from what Fergie’s Pub has faced over the years, though. Reputable for inspiring camaraderie among patrons and Fergie himself, Fergie’s Pub attracts guests anywhere from the ages of 21 to 70. More recently, an increase in tourists and Center City workers have made their way into the mix. The atmosphere of Fergie’s is familiar and friendly, regardless of who steps foot inside.
“I want you to see the same friendly face and the same friendly banter all the time,” Carey said.
The pub, standing at two stories high, offers entertainment ranging from stand-up comedy, live band karaoke, open mic nights, and their infamous games of quizzo. The decor is a display of personal touches anywhere from Christmas lights to an Irish license plate reading “Fergie’s Pub.”
Chalked up on a blackboard, patrons will find a list of delicious menu options, including soups, salads, appetizers, entrees, and the Fergie’s Angus Burger. As for drinks, Fergie’s likes to keep beer local, sourcing from breweries like Yards, Nodding Head, and Philadelphia Brewing Company.

When it comes to change, Fergie’s Pub has dealt with a lot—right in its backyard. However, communication and neighborly love goes a long way.
“During the construction of 1213 Walnut, the ownership reached out and definitely tried to keep me in the loop when things were happening,” Carey said. “And they helped me out in many ways. I think we have a very good relationship.”
When asked about us, his newest neighbors at 1213 Walnut, Carey joked that while he’s still waiting on his free apartment, he wants Fergie’s to be the bar that our residents can come to in their slippers.
“I’d like them to think of me as part of their building,” Fergie added with a smile.
The party has only started for Fergie’s Pub and 1213 Walnut’s next-door relationship. In fact, this week Fergie’s is celebrating their 23rd anniversary and the end of 1213’s construction.
