Philly’s Premier Music Venue is Back in Biz
September 2, 2021As Philly slowly reopens, we’re getting to get back to all of the things that make the city as awesome as it is: world-class restaurants, diverse shopping opportunities, history and cultural institutions. And right near your 1213 Walnut apartment, there are also plenty of entertainment venues to deliver all of the fun you’ve been missing over the last year-and-a-half: comedy clubs, theater performances and live concerts.
On the last front, one of the region’s best-known music clubs is back in business—and just minutes from your 1213 Walnut apartment. Theatre of the Living Arts has been a South Street mainstay for more than 30 years, however, its history goes back much further. The theater itself originally opened its doors in 1908, and has served as a variety of entertainment venues over the years, including an opera house and a movie theater. Now, it can host up to 1,000 music lovers, bringing in some of the most promising emerging talent across all musical genres. And, since it’s situated right in the middle of South Street—with its funky, vintage shops, record stores and art galleries—it’s the perfect spot for this artsy icon.
Here are just a few of the shows they have coming up:
- Charley Crockett, a blues artist who draws international inspiration owing to his musical travels around the world—Sept. 3
- Avatar: Going Hunting Tour, a self-billed circus show that plays death metal—Sept. 5
- Conway the Machine, up-and-coming rapper, Sept. 12
- THE HU: The Hun Tour, a Mongolian folk rock and heavy metal band, Sept. 14
- J.I.: Young and Restless Tour, a freestyle artist who was discovered when his social media performances went viral, Sept. 15
