Check Out the Fashion District’s Latest Addition in Philly
September 14, 2021The Fashion District is one of the city’s newest havens for shopping and dining, with dozens of apparel stores, a winery, restaurants and much more. And now, it’s also a hub for arts and entertainment with the addition of an expansive, multimedia art exhibit.
Wonderspaces opened earlier this year as a new, permanent exhibition within the mall area, a half-mile from your 1213 Walnut apartment. The venue stretches across several floors and covers 24,000 square feet, offering room after room full of experimental and eye-opening artwork. With permanent fixtures and rotating installations that showcase top artistic talent from around the world, Wonderspaces provides one of the city’s most unique and thought-provoking ways to explore the world of art.
There are more than a dozen different installations throughout the space, all of which offer a unique—and, often, hands-on—experience. One of the venue’s signature pieces is the first-floor light exhibit, Submergence. Comprised of more than 8,000 dangling lights that all dance to music and change colors every few seconds, the display is dazzling—and a perfect backdrop for any inspiring Instagram influencer!
Light is also the focus of Body Paint, which allows visitors to “paint” on the walls using only their bodies. With sensors that detect body heat, the walls light up tons of different colors as you move or dance in front of them, creating an eye-popping experience. Throughout Wonderspaces are also opportunities to participate in creations of public art. A wall called Our Top 100 invites guests to submit their favorite songs, and share stories associated, offering plenty of material to build your next Spotify playlist. The Last Word is another community exhibit that encourages feedback. Hundreds of small rolls of paper make a fascinating mosaic along one wall that, when disassembled, showcase what visitors wish they had said in some of their biggest moments.
Whether you’re looking for an art experience that satisfies the eyes or one that challenges the mind, you can find both at Wonderspaces.
